This Vectrex controller hardware is a trackball using an Atari 2600 CX80 (CX-80) Trak-Ball as a starting platform.
Vectrex controller analog joystick interfacing is accomplished using Jay Tilton's D/A Converter tied to the Vectrex joystick.
To support the extra buttons used by Vectrex games additional modification is required. At least two additional holes drilled in the case to support at least two more buttons are required. All buttons need to be low profile (short on the inside) button design. This is required in order to allow the button clearance on the inside, but still fit through the case far enough to allow for secure attachment.
For this conversion six more holes and six additional buttons were utilized. This method for modification was selected in order to support a full control complement button layout for ambidextrous controller usage. During conversion all buttons,including the factory Atari buttons, are physically rewired to match the Vectrex controller button access. Button mapping starts from the bottom and ascends.
Button 1 (an added button with the red actuator) is the lowest physical button.
Button 2 (an added button with the red actuator) is the middle lower physical button.
Button 3 (an added button with the red actuator) is the middle higher physical button.
Button 4 (the default Atari trackball button) is the highest physical button.
Button mapping between the left and right sides are the same for ambidextrous usage.
