Augmented REality Sandtable (ARES) users that have both a physical sand table and a HoloLens are afforded the benefits of the tactile interface of the sand along with the added ability to visualize assets in the airspace above the table.
Project Overview:
ARES is part of the Army Research Lab’s (ARL’s) efforts to improve battlespace visualization in order to provide a user-defined common operating picture at the point of need. By coupling numerous display types (head mounted, projectors, PCs) with various user interaction methods (tangible media, gestures, tablets, voice, etc.), ARL is experimenting with new immersive technologies for commanders and staffs down to individual warfighters. The ARES architecture also allows distributed users to collaborate in real time via whatever display methods they have available. The technology is currently being used by several ROTC units, West Point, and various commands throughout the Army and DoD.
