John Harley Weston wrote ‘In Love With Berlin’ (released October 2022) after working in the city for several months with his cousin, artist Douglas Gordon, who lives there.
Upon returning to Australia, where the Scotsman now lives, John would regularly receive short videos from Douglas, usually in the middle of the night. Ding!
Inspired by these wild and wonderful Berlin memories, and at a very loose end during Covid lockdowns, John started mucking around with some synth and piano parts, then some lyrics to capture how he felt about the city.
Partly in German, and also English, the song started as a bit of fun, with John tipping his hat to ’80s, ’90s’ and 2000s Euro-rock and dance music. As the song developed it became super catchy, and things got more serious.
The genre is probably closest to Neue Deutsche Welle (New German Wave) rock music, which was born from late '70s, post punk, new wave and electronic influences. With a foot in synth pop it’s a nice departure from John's usual rock and bluesy, soulful roots. Perhaps this is the start of a Zweiter Neue Deutsche Welle (Second New German Wave)
Because much of our memory is visual, John produced a music video of the same title (on Youtube) to compliment the song, capturing the energy of the city, using some his own photos and video footage in the process.
He says, ‘Berlin is such a free, mature, tolerant, multi-cultural, safe city, with beautiful people, architecture, art galleries and museums. As you walk around, music fills the urban air and clubs, with an excited hope, that echoes through Berlin's broad streets and shoulders. It's easy to love Berlin.’

Weston usually favours guitar-based rootsy, rock, but lately his gaze has been wider. For his previous single, he dusted off his piano for the epic, lyrical ballad, ‘Voices’, about his first date with his wife in Glasgow’s George Square at midnight. And latest song, ‘In Love With Berlin’, he’s back on the piano, but he’s pressing synth buttons too. How dare he!
Weston’s blend of polished songwriting comes from years of working with legends in the music game e.g. Gary Katz (Steeley Dan producer) and Kenny McDonald (Texas), Sandy Jones (Wet Wet Wet). Previously signed to Phonogram with Scottish band Frontier, John moved Downunder in the late ‘90s. He won the Australian National Songwriting Contest (2005 rock category) with ‘Last Days Of Summer’, and his humanitarian lament, ‘Brothers And Sisters’ held #1 spot for an entire 6 months on Australian Indie Radio Charts.
He’s released three independent albums, ‘Hope Harbour (2004), ‘Welcome Back To Reality’ (2008) and ‘Music Man’ (2016), plus singles, ‘Voices’ (2022) and now, ‘In Love With Berlin’ (2022). He also released a single ‘Road To Victory’ for the mighty Aussie Rules football team, Brisbane Lions, via Festival/Mushroom Records (1999).
