“I Complained That I Had No Shoes…”

Saadi once wrote:

“I was complaining about having no shoes,
Until I saw a man who had no feet.”

Shaykh Saadi once found himself poor and walking barefoot through the streets of Damascus. As he walked, he felt bitter and disheartened and began to complain inwardly to God:

“O Allah! Why am I deprived of even the simplest blessings like a pair of shoes? Why am I so poor when others live in comfort?”

As he walked on in sadness, he came across a man who had no feet at all—sitting by the side of the road, unable to walk.

Suddenly, Saadi was struck with the realization of how ungrateful he had been. He looked down at his own feet—healthy, whole, and able to carry him wherever he wished.

He wept and thanked God:

“Forgive me, O Lord. I had shoes to ask for, because I had feet to walk with. I had forgotten the blessings I already had.”

Moral of the Story:

This story is a profound reminder to always be grateful, even in times of hardship. Gratitude doesn’t come from having everything—it comes from recognizing what we already have. Saadi teaches us to shift our perspective:
