When Italians first started to extol the lives and achievements of their artists, they praised the piety of their artists and valued the lively discourse between, art, faith and science. But as art history developed into an international discipline, particularly in the age of the Enlightenment, the modern thesis took shape that that art excels only when it rejects the sacred, a mindset still prevalent today. The art stayed the same, but the viewpoint changed. This talk explores the birth of art history as a modern discipline---its founders, influences and messages---and how it affects our understanding of art today.
