So let's get into the topic of pulsing for red light therapy:

✅ When I started red light therapy devices, pulsed red light therapy or red light therapy pulsing was considered counterproductive. There's a considerable overlap between the concepts of pulsing and flicker, and, a few years ago, all companies successfully eliminated flicker in their panel. The result was that all panels offered flicker-free continuous red light therapy pulsing
✅ So today I'm considering the science of whether red light therapy pulsing is beneficial or whether it's something you should avoid
✅ But let's first define the topic. Pulsing is defined as "fleeting peaks of light when emitted from a red light therapy device". So at different intervals, either light is emitted or not. During continuous exposure, however, there's light shining at all times
✅ So why has pulsing become an essential topic in the red light therapy space? Joovv came out with a pulsed red light therapy panel a few years back at 10 Hz. Competitors on the scene, though said that Joovv's move was a marketing play and a gimmick.
✅ Right now, LightpathLED and Infraredi offer far more extensive pulsing options. And these products pulse both red and near-infrared light. The pulsing frequencies range from 1-9,999Hz in fact and are custom programmable.
✅ The pulsed red light can be dangerous, though, so you should always wear protective glasses during that process due to the risk of stress, headaches, and even seizures
✅ There's no such thing as "pulsing," though - such as the frequency in Hertz, the amplitude of the pulse, and different factors. So 100 Hz pulsing at 810nm might benefit Alzheimer's, while at 850nm it's not. You'll also receive less energy with pulsing. Many studies on pulsing also use medical-grade lasers, not LEDs
✅ There are some benefits to pulsed red light therapy. First, pulsing allows you to use higher irradiance, i.e. higher power outputs. But pulsing may not be needed with today's power intensities
✅ Also, pulsed light often has a different effect on the body than continuous wavelengths, but the reasons aren't always clear
✅ Next up, pulsing may also cause entrainment in the brain if you match the pulsing frequency with that of the brain, such as Alpha or Gamma brainwaves
✅ Then, there's the Vielight which actually has decent scientific backing, even when using the pulsing frequencies
✅ Overall though, I cannot recommend pulsing and say it's better than continuous light. The risk here is that red light therapy pulsing further overcomplicates a topic that's already very complicated
✅ For that reason, I personally don't bother with pulsing!
✅ And, pulsing is great from a marketing point of view. However, it doesn't necessarily mean that pulsing is bad, as it can work. We need to learn how to precisely apply it
