Alexandra Palace Theatre has been restored as part of the East Wing Restoration Project, and now hosts live performances for the first time in 80 years. The Theatre is a time capsule, where the arrested decay tells of its long history. Originally built as part of the many Palace entertainment spaces in 1875 it was designed to showcase the most spectacular performances, including pantomime, opera, dance, ballet, music hall and later cinema. Complicated under stage machinery was installed to produce special effects for magical transformations, disappearances and flying.

Remarkably this equipment survives at Alexandra Palace, as an incredibly rare example considering that most other stages have been replaced and updated. During the restoration, a team from Lincoln Conservation came to Alexandra Palace to capture the under stage area in 3D, as part of their Hidden Heritage project; to investigate and help us understand how this complex and historically significant machinery worked.
