Описание к видео Another BBC Breakfast News Story: Rising Violence Abuse & Theft in Retail Outlets Small & Large

Another televised BBC Breakfast News story relating to the sharp increase in violence, anti-social behaviour, abuse and theft against retailers small and big.

See some of the experiences of one independently owned retailer in Croydon is facing on a daily basis in his store where people just walk in, pick up what they want and leave without even attempting to pay. They don't even care if they have been seen or not.

Smaller Independently owned retailers cannot afford security equipment such as CCTV. Retail groups including, Catch a Thief UK are campaigning for funding to help independently owned retailers get better security in place, such as better CCTV, Security Guards and other crime prevention and detection technologies and solutions.

Violence is becoming a massive problem in retail outlets up and down the country, small and big.

The owner of the store in this story, not too long ago experienced two or three thefts a week, he is now experiencing up to eight thefts a day with some of them being violent and abusive. On one occasion the store owner was threatened with a samurai style machete after he approached the shoplifter to try and retrieve his goods.

The store owner invested in a security screening around the shop counter as his staff have been spat at and verbally abused and threatened by some bad customers.

One of the staff members expressed that she is so scared to go to work as she has been threatened when she leaves her place of work and is frightened that she could be attacked or followed home.

The Police and a number of UK retail giants have formed a partnership to tackle the rise in retail crime. The new partnership has been named Project Pegasus.

Under Project Pegasus, 10 of the UK's biggest retailers have partnered with police to try to clamp down on shoplifting. The stores, including John Lewis, Co-op, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Waitrose and Next, have come together to provide funds of £600,000 to police forces.
