Miri May Fest has been held in Miri since 1989. However in the year 2005 marks an important year that Miri had been officially upgraded to a City status. Miri Resort City.

On 20th May 2005 , Miri becomes the 10th City of Malaysia.
On that day, celebrations across the downtown of Miri City , with parades and performances.

Since then, 20th May of every year known as Miri City Day.
