A round of applause rang out just outside City Hall as dignitaries and donors cut a ceremonial ribbon and officially opened Naperville Jaycees Park to the public.

The 12,500-square-foot smart park comes equipped with plenty of seating and tables, 26 waterproof outlets, 2 quick charging stations, a water fountain, and WiFi called Jaycees Park.

And the park is also environmentally friendly.

“We’ve incorporated accessibility and sustainability into this park,” said Mayor Steve Chirico. “161 solar panels on the roof of City Hall provide its energy. Permeable pavers and a rain garden make this place eco-friendly.”

The smart park took less than a year to construct, and costs were near $600,000. But thanks to donors like the Jaycees, who’ll donate $200,000 over the next 10 years, and other benefactors, the park cost taxpayers zero dollars.

“We’re very excited about this full circle of our community and that is bringing people together. That’s what our community is all about and this smart park is no different,” said President and CEO of Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce Nicki Anderson.
