Peter Ruzicka - Metastrofe (1971) an attempt at a breakout for orchestra

Andy Martin writes: Peter Ruzicka (b 1948) is one of the many minor German composers who rose to prominence in the 1970s for his avant gardening but, in common with many other composers (Penderecki, Nordheim, Ichiyanagi et al) turned to more conventional idioms during the 1980s. Metastrofe (1971) for orchestra is ‘an attempt at a breakout’ (so the composer states) but I’m not certain the desired liberation is successful...yet what a racket! The brief quote from Gustav Mahler is not unusual; he also quotes Mahler in his Fragmente (1970) for string quartet. The paintings are by Kazuo Shiraga plus a few snaps of Akira Ishii who was our drummer and flautist from 1998 to 1999.
