In the pantheon of civil rights leaders in the United States, the name of the Reverend Jesse Jackson sits alongside that of Martin Luther King. If Luther King had the dream, it was Jackson who kept it alive in part with not one but two tilts at becoming president. Now sadly at the age of 84, Jesse Jackson has died. He saw some of the dream realised, with the election of Barak Obama when he cried tears of joy. Jesse Jackson was a powerful orator and a powerful campaigner for African American rights. For many years he was the conscience of the Democratic Party.
