Grand Rapids Public Museum CEO Dale Robertson called the museum's 97-year-old carousel an “icon,” and for the first time, it'll be wheelchair accessible.

The 1928 Spillman Carousel is housed in the Cook Carousel Pavilion. Its $12 million to $15 million restoration will feature accessibility upgrades like sound-dampening baffles, ramps, ride announcements in both English and Spanish, and additional space for viewing. Its horses and menagerie are also being restored to preserve their original charm.

“The carousel has become an icon of the museum. Along with the whale, they’re probably the two things people think of the most,” Robertson said. “The baseline goal of the museum is to be as physically and cognitively accessible to the broadest population.”
