Is Ova Magica Worth Buying in Early Access? Pre-Release Steam Review

Ova Magica is now available on Steam as an Early Access game, ahead of full release in 2025. Watch this review to figure out if you should buy the game now, or wait until the full release.

Thanks to a pre-release creator key, I was able to play over 25 hours and complete a full year. Below is a brief summary of the key points!

Quality
The game is one of the most polished games I've seen at launch, including both early access and full release games. The amount of bugs is minimal and the controls are easy to use.

Pacing
Ova Magica is a faster-paced farm sim, with 4 days per week, and 3 weeks per season. This makes each season 12 days long and a full year 36 days long, which I have played in around 20 hours. You can also play a festival every 4 days, and it's exciting to play through seasons and multiple years, through a fun gameplay loop.

Available Content at Early Access Launch
At launch of Early Access, the game includes:
- 9 festivals, each with unique activities, dialogue and rewards
- Cross-breeding, inheriting aesthetic elements, abilities and powers
- Blob Battling, including Clover Cup Tournaments
- Friendship Events up to Level 3 with Rewards
- Town Buildings like Museum
- Farming, Fishing and Cooking
- Forest and Pirate Blob Worlds
- Around 35 to 40 Base Blobs
- Secret mini-boss!

Future Updates
Most of the future updates will include new content, including additional blobs, more friendship events, blob worlds, and new areas, like the sewers or the waterfall cave.

Key aspects missing are translations, and for obvious reasons, ports, both of which are being worked on.

Recommendation
The game already includes a lot of content that makes it worth the money and has, to be honest, endless hours of gameplay. It's personally one of my favourite games of all time, and the developer has been extremely responsive and made several updates based on player feedback.

I would recommend most players to get it now and help the game succeed! It makes sense to wait if you are a console players or require a non-English translation, due to the large amount of text in the game. Either way, it's a must-buy once it's fully released.
