Nummular dermatitis, also known as discoid eczema, is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterized by coin-shaped (nummular) patches of red, itchy, and sometimes oozing skin. These round or oval lesions most commonly appear on the arms, legs, hands, and torso and are often mistaken for fungal infections due to their distinct shape. The condition affects both adults and children but is more prevalent in older adults, particularly during the winter months when the skin is drier.

The exact cause of nummular dermatitis is unknown, though it is believed to result from a combination of genetic, environmental, and immune factors. Dry skin and certain triggers like soaps, harsh detergents, wool, stress, and changes in weather are known to exacerbate the condition. Additionally, individuals with a history of other forms of eczema or allergies are more susceptible to nummular dermatitis.

Symptoms include red, scaly, and itchy patches that can sometimes blister or ooze, especially if scratched. These lesions can be highly uncomfortable and may leave dark or light marks as they heal, which can persist for weeks to months.

Treatment involves managing symptoms, preventing flare-ups, and maintaining skin hydration. Topical corticosteroids and moisturizers are typically recommended to reduce inflammation and keep the skin barrier intact. In some cases, antibiotics may be necessary if secondary bacterial infection occurs. Lifestyle adjustments, such as using mild soaps, avoiding hot showers, and applying moisturizers immediately after bathing, can also help in preventing recurrence. Effective management improves comfort and helps prevent complications.
