Specific Learning Outcomes
At the end of this lesson, the learners are able to:
1. Demonstrate understanding about physical and chemical properties of minerals
2. Identify some common rock-forming minerals
3. Classify minerals based on chemical affinity

Here, we are going to talk about some properties of minerals and ways to identify them such as:
1. Luster which is the quality and intensity of reflected light exhibited by the mineral.
2. Hardness: it is a measure of the resistance of a mineral to abrasion. This is done using the Mohs Scale of Hardness measures the scratch resistance of various minerals from a scale of 1 to 10, based on the ability of a harder material/mineral to scratch a softer one.
3. Color is the easiest physical property to describe, however it can also be the most difficult property to make a mineral identification.
4. Streak is the mineral’s color in powdered form. It is inherent in almost every mineral, and is a more diagnostic property compared to color. Note that the color of a mineral can be different from its streak.
5. Crystal habit is the tendency for specimens of a mineral to repeatedly grow into characteristic shapes.
6. A crystal form is a solid crystalline object that is bounded by a set of flat faces that are related to one another by symmetry.
7. Cleavage is the property of some minerals to break along specific planes of weakness to form smooth, flat surfaces
8.Specific Gravity is the ratio of the density of the mineral and the density of water
