South Korea faces a political crisis after President Yoon Suk-yeol’s short-lived declaration of martial law, citing threats from North Korea, was swiftly overturned by the National Assembly. Parliament unanimously voted to rescind the decree, including members of Yoon’s own party, following public outrage and accusations of overreach. The opposition has submitted a motion to impeach Yoon, alleging he can no longer govern effectively and calling for his resignation. Yoon’s ruling party, grappling with internal dissent, also faces demands for the dismissal of Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun and the entire cabinet. If impeachment proceeds, the Constitutional Court will have the final say, potentially paving the way for interim leadership by Prime Minister Han Duck-soo until elections are held
