This Japanese malt whisky should be nice and balanced!

This is one of Nikka Whisky’s core malt products, with the other two being the Yoichi and Miyagikyo single malts. It’s a pure malt which means it’s a blended malt whiskey from both the Miyagikyo and Yoichi Distilleries. The Miyagikyo distillery aims to make lightly peated or unpeated malt and grain whisky. The Yoichi Distillery makes peated and heavily peated whiskey.

This whiskey should therefore be on the more balanced side, with some smoke, malt and cask influence shining through instead of being dominated by one note.

It comes in at 43% ABV, but doesn’t have a lot of information about its age statement, if it’s been chill filtered, had colour added or even how much of each whisky is used in the blend, so let’s get into the tasting notes!

Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt Whisky Tasting notes
Nose
The nose is full of caramel, apples and pears, with vanilla icing sugar, oak spice and some peat smoke rounding it out. Following the immediate hit of flavours, there's alsosome roasted grains, cinnamon spice and a touch of coffee.

Palate
On the palate, there's a bit of sweet honey, followed by peat smoke, but it's all quite light, with more apples from the nose, matched with some red berries. On the second sip, the peat smoke builds, but doesn't dominate, letting the roasted, malted barley stay present.

Finish
The finish remains light, with sweetness and oak spice lingering on, with a touch of smoke after a breath

Overall, this is a nice little whiskey, blending the best flavours from both of Nikka's distilleries, but I think it's a bit overpriced outside of Japan for what is ultimately, a Non Age Statement blended malt whiskey.
