With the partition of India in 1947, the Rajshahi Division was separated from the then divisional city of Jalpaiguri , and large educational institutions, including medical schools and hospitals, moved to India, depriving the Rajshahi Division of medical education and health services.
Later, in 1949, some educationists, well-known social workers, political elites and various personalities involved in the administration came to Rajshahi completely privately. Established a medical school in the town. First, a four-year LMF diploma course was introduced under the State Medical Faculty Dhaka. 60 students were admitted in the first year. The co-operative building at Saheb Bazar was used as the school's classroom in the school's classroom. The medical school departments were located on the ground floor of the present TB Clinic building. A building was constructed on the west side of the premises of Barind Museum building for autopsy of Anatomy Department. 'Kachiran Villa' opposite Alamgir Hostel Boys and Civil Surgeon's Office opposite Rajshahi College Used as a girls hostel. In 1954, the then East Pakistan government converted it into a government medical college. In 1956, it became a full-fledged medical college. From then on, the path of Rajshahi Medical College (RAMEC) started. It is the second medical college in Bangladesh after Dhaka Medical College. At first, the head of the department of anatomy and physiology was the 1st principal of the college, respectively. Colonel Gias Uddin Ahmed and Professor. Naib Ali. The journey of the college started with only 5 office staff. A total of 43 students including 2 students were admitted in the first batch. The college and hospital premises are located on about 90 acres of land. The building for the medical school is the present college building built on 30 bighas of land. Medicine, The three-storied 530-bed hospital with surgery and obstetrics department was opened in April 1985. The hospital building was built on about 60 acres of land which was formerly an agricultural farm. The 20-bed Infectious Diseases Hospital, Leprosy Control Center and the 150-bed Sadar Hospital College were included. Later Sadar Hospital was converted into a dental unit.
The present college offers MBBS, BDS and post graduate courses in various subjects. The BDS course was introduced in 1990 and the post graduate course in 1997. Rajshahi Medical College has educated many students from different countries. These include India , Nepal , Pakistan , Sri Lanka , Bhutan , Iraq , IranSignificant. The college was recognized by the General Medical Council, Great Britain on 1 July 1992. A large number of doctors, students and staff of this college participated in the great liberation war of 1971. The Shaheed Minar was built in 1984 in front of the administrative building of the Medical College. In 2006, a memorial plaque was erected next to the Shaheed Minar at the initiative of the teachers' association with the names of 6 people of Shaheed Rajshahi Medical College during the war of liberation. [2]
