The 'Liege & Lief' album is generally regarded as the place English folk-rock began. It was released in December 1969, but a couple of months earlier on September 24, Fairport debuted the album in a special performance at the Royal Festival Hall. Supports were Nick Drake and John & Beverley Martyn.

This was the debut of the line-up with Dave Swarbrick as a full member, and the band's return after the car crash earlier that year.

While the album is a classic now, at the time of this recording all songs would have been new to the audience, who were experiencing the birth of a whole new musical form. A pity therefore that the sound quality of the only known recording of the performance is so poor, but at least someone had the foresight to do it.
