For the first review of our new reality I wanted something a little heartwarming and a little special. So we're doing an Edelbrand.

To review, Edelbrand is a tiny, super-adorable field-to-glass family operation just outside of St. Louis, and they quite frankly cleaned house in the American eau de vie face-off I did a year ago (see    • Yankee Eau-de-Vie, I: Cherry/Pear Brandy f...   and    • Yankee Eau-de-Vie, II: Plum/Apple Brandy f...   and    • Yankee Eau-de-Vie, III: Weird Brandy from ...   ). Yes they're expensive, yes they're still bottling at somewhat lower proofs, but they're also everything I love about US craft distilling. Up today is their cheapest offering (at least until the gin hits - yes I've tried it, and yes it's good): an eau de vie of beer (bierbrand or bierschnaps) distilled from Thrales Russian Imperial Stout out of local brewery Urban Chestnut. Stats:

Edelbrand Vinars da Gervosa No. 625, Bierbrand distilled from Thrales Russian Imperial Stout (Marthasville, Missouri; batch no. 2302, distilled in 18-gallon pot still circa 2022, 356 half-bottles; 40% ABV), 84/100

Does what it says on the label. You're getting roasted malts, milk chocolate, and a hint of the ganja (that's the hops), and despite the low strength a drop of water actually ups the mouth presence. It's delicious, beautifully made, highly crushable, and like nothing you've had before. Well worth your attention, but I also won't criticize if you want to hold out for their gin....
