These young students wanted to serve the nation as civil servants. They are not alive anyone, their names are Shreya Yadav, Tania Soni and Navi Delvin. They died after drowning in the basements of their coaching centre in Delhi. Three lives were lost because of misgovernance.


The tragic death of these three students happened at Rau's IAS Study Circle in Rajendra Nagar, Delhi. The details are shocking and viewer discretion is advised.On Saturday, Rau's IAS Study Circle, Rajendra Nagar, in Delhi, excessive rainfall resulted in a flood-like situation. Water gushed into the basement of the coaching centre, which was being used illegally as a library.


Videos captured before the recovery of the bodies show students rushing out of the flooded basement. A man can be heard urging students to leave the basement quickly.
The basement had 30 students who waded through the water as it was gushing down. Authorities received a call about the waterlogging around 7 PM.


Three students – 25-year-old Shreya Yadav, Tania Soni, and 28-year-old Navin Delvin - were left behind, trapped. They died. The bodies were recovered after a seven-hour-long rescue operation.
The Delhi Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) and formed multiple teams to investigate. The owner and coordinator of Rau's IAS Study Circle, including 7 people have been arrested and charged with culpable homicide.


Locals blame the poor drainage system in the area. They say it was heavily clogged with silt and overflowed, leading to a flood-like situation.


Preliminary findings suggest multiple lapses by the coaching centre's management and civic authorities.The building plan, approved by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi in 2021, falsely designated the basement as a storeroom. The institute was using the basement as a library or classroom, which violated the No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the fire department.


The incident has drawn anger and wrath of students and families. Students and locals have staged protests, demanding justice for the victims and accountability from those responsible. Rau's IAS Study Circle expressed deep sorrow and said it was committed to cooperating fully with the investigation.


The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) since has since sealed 13 coaching centres in Old Rajinder Nagar. But most of these actions are post-facto, they are too little, too late. They usually last for a few days and affect no long-term change.
These incidents serve as a wake-up call for civil bodies and authorities, from the fire incident in a children’s hospital in Vivek Vihar in Delhi in May, which claimed 7 lives to the Rajender Nagar flooding, the building plans in these cases are often found to be violation the law. It's a case of civic apathy and can be simply avoided with more frequent audits, stringent checks and physical inspections by officials, that is, if the administration does its job.
