Описание к видео My blood pressure dropped when I got an epidural. What are the chances of that happening again?

You mentioned that with one of your labors in the past, you got an epidural, and then your blood pressure dropped, making you feel a little bit sick, and it affected your baby's heart rate pattern, and you're wondering if this might happen in the future. We know that after you get an epidural, your blood pressure will drop. This is not a complication, it's a side effect, and it's because of how the medication works on your body. The medication that goes into your epidural space acts on your nerves, and one of the things that it does is cause all the vessels in your body to dilate, and when your vessels dilate, that causes your blood pressure to fall. Now we start an IV on everyone who is going to get an epidural, usually every patient in general, just because it's a safety measure, but, for sure, you need to have one before you get an epidural. And we give you a lot of fluid beforehand, and this increases your blood pressure so that after you get the epidural and it's dosed, and your blood pressure naturally falls from that, it won't fall to a level that makes you feel sick or nauseous, or affect blood flow to your baby.

Sometimes it does fall a little bit lower than we would like, and yes, you do feel nauseous and sick, but it's not a complication really. It's something that we can easily fix. Usually the anesthesiologist is asked to come in and give you some medication through your IV to bring it right back up. This happens in a matter of seconds to a minute, and you're feeling better, and blood flow is better to your baby, and everything is resolved. And just because it happened last time does't mean it will happen the next time. It's kind of circumstantial, and it's not necessarily that you are predisposed to it or anything. So don't let your history of having your blood pressure drop affect your decision to get another one in the future. If you have more specific questions about it, don't ever hesitate to talk with your doctor when you get pregnant again. And if you have any other questions for me in the future, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at   / intermountainmoms  , and recommend us to your friends and family too.
