A North Carolina man became a hero when he risked his own life to save a woman from Hurricane Helene's raging floodwaters in Ashe County.

Eddie Hunnell was visiting Grassy Creek for his son's wedding when the floodwaters rose rapidly. As a nearby home was being swept away, Hunnell saw a group of onlookers screaming for help. The homeowner, Leslie Worth, was trapped inside.

It was at that moment that Hunnell made a decision that saved her life and created an everlasting bond with Worth's family.

"When it was happening, I was trying to make the calculated risk of 'how do we save her?" Hunnell said.
