the Supreme Court has taken suo moto cognisance of the non-availability of mid-day meals to children due to the closure of schools in the wake of novel coronavirus outbreak.

Schools in most parts of the country temporarily were closed this month after an increase in the confirmed cases of novel coronavirus in India. Schools in Delhi-NCR closed till March 31 in view of the Covid-19 outbreak.

The decision by the Kerala government was announced by the Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan to ensure that underprivileged kids still have access to the mid-day meals served in government schools every day often the only major source of nutrition for these kids.

he coronavirus outbreak, which has already been declared a "pandemic" by the World Health Organisation, has alarmed health officials in India following a spike in new cases being reported from several states over the past few weeks. The total number of people who have tested positive for Covid-19 (the disease caused by novel coronavirus) reached 137 on March 17 as 23 new cases were reported. Of these 137 cases, 14 have been discharged following treatment while three have died (one each in Delhi, Maharashtra and Karnataka).

These three patients were immediately put in isolation at state medical facilities and over 3,400 people who were suspected to have come in contact with them were put in quarantines and observed for coronavirus-related symptoms. Days later, the three positive cases were discharged following treatment.

Between March 2 and March 17, a total of 134 new Covid-19 cases were reported in India. These cases have been reported from 15 states and Union Territories: Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, J&K, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Odisha and Ladakh.
