Bipolar Disorder is a lot like diabetes in the sense that monitoring, adjusting medications is crucial. Ptsd is the same. As traumatic life events happen we can lose sleep which will send us into hypomania/mania very quickly. You should know your limits because when I went hypomanic because of Anosognosia (the unawareness that you are sick) I had no idea I was hypomanic and close the to edge. Mania goes on like a light switch very, very fast. I am lucky to have my husband to help me through. The psych ward was no fun but entirely necessary. For me my limit is less than 6 hours of sleep over 3 nights, or staying up for 2 nights with very little sleep.

Once you are sick because of the Anosognosia it can be very difficult to accept treatment especially if you go into psychosis. If you don't like your meds or don't feel yourself on them or are slower they are likely not the correct medication for you. Make sure you are honest and speak to your Doctor about any side effects. If your doctor is not cooperating with you, change doctors.

Currently I take 400mg Lamictal (mood stabilizer) 200mg at night and 200mg in the morning. The only side effect I have noticed is enhanced sensitivty to sunlight.

Atarax (hydroxyzine) PTSD and anxiety 25mg (no side effects for me)

We are adding Giodon (Anti-Psychotic) (TBD on side effects haven't tried it yet.
