In continuous rain (following an extremely dry autumn) at the Western Oval, Carlton fail completely to adapt to the slippery conditions. With one minute to go, the Blues were on 0-10 (10) and a last-minute goal averted only the second goalless VFL/AFL score in seventy years.

This game was originally on Name A Game VHS but lost from the master library, and I have found only some televised highlights. Especially wanted are the opening few minutes when the Blues were on top into the breeze and had two goals disallowed. Its historic and statistical value demands preservation of the full game for future generations of football fans. The near-failure of the Blues to kick a goal attracted (if I recall) a lot of attention from the nightly news and it would be great to see some of these reports. Phil Krakouer in his third-last VFL/AFL game, became the only player since 1965 to play in more than one side that conceded only one goal, having played for North Melbourne against Fitzroy in 1989.

The game was a critical moment in the 1991 season, being the dividing point between a bone-dry first half and a wet second half, with repercussions far beyond Carlton's record low score: the change in the weather ultimately led to Hawthorn overpowering the previously invincible West Coast Eagles for the flag.

The game turned out to be the last time Carlton played Footscray at the Western Oval. The 1992, 1995 and 1996 Bulldogs home games were at the MCG, then the Bulldogs moved to Princes Park in 1997.
