Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff joined local officials at the Norwalk Fire Department headquarters Friday morning to present checks to eight Norwalk nonprofit organizations.
"On behalf of Cablevision, we are always very pleased to have opportunities to be supportive of so many worthwhile organizations here in our community," said Area Director of Government Affairs at Cablevision Michael Chowaniec.
Duff helped coordinate private holiday donations which totaled to $16,750 raised from businesses like Altria, Aetna, Cablevision, Dominion, The Travelers and others to benefit nonprofits in need: Person-to-Person, the Fire Victims Fund, Children's Connection, Community Plates, the Carver Center, Norwalk Reads!, Norwalk PAL, and St. Vincent De Paul.
"These are all really great non-profits and they deserve all the help we can give them," said Sen. Bob Duff. "We were able to raise $16,750 this year. Last year we raised $13,850, which is a 21 percent increase, which a is far cry from $5,500, which was 2009. So each year we're going to get a little bit better and raise a little bit more money."
"About five years ago PAL had very little money in the treasury," said Norwalk Chief of Police Thomas Kulhawik. "We did few donations here and there but over the last five years because of the support from Senator Duff, the community and a lot of businesses, we've raised our treasury and now we're doing a lot of good work."
"We've given out close to 100,000 books to Norwalk's children," said Stephen Bentkover, Norwalk Reads! chairman. "And It come from a variety of places, donations like this and this is our second year with Cablevision and we really appreciate the support."
"It's good to be a friend of Bob Duff because he has a lot of friends," said Norwalk Fire Chief Denis McCarthy. "And fortunately not all 100 thousand of them show up at his house, but those who care about the community do and this fire victim's fund started in 2009 from the outpouring support of the community for a family that lost their home to a gas explosion."
