S. Francisco Ribeira Valley suffered an intense process of desertification. After the intervention of the FAO project on Urban and Periurban Forestry, the area was reforested by the local women association, bringing back local flora such as date palms, with agroforestry added value. It contributed to the local economic empowerment while fighting desertification and climate change. This success story shows how effective is involving local communities in sustainable forestry management and its direct benefits for these population that lives in the Praia periurban area.
