4. SOUNDBITE (English) Geoff Mulvihill, Associated Press:
"CVS and Walgreens have had some smaller settlements. There have been some pharmacy cases that have gone to trial. It's sort of the next wave of litigation was going to involve the major pharmacies. So it was creating pressure on the business. And it looks like they feel like the settlement is a way to get rid of this liability, contribute to a solution, and move ahead with their main business."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Geoff Mulvihill, The Associated Press:
"It's pretty standard that companies would agree to settlements without admitting wrongdoing. This has been a thorn in the business' s sides. If lots of cases went to trial, it could end up costing the companies far more. This gives them some financial certainty and a chance to move ahead with their regular business operations."

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Courtney Gary-Allen, Organizing Director at Maine Recovery Advocacy Project:
"As we've seen with every settlement that's come before today's settlement, we know that no amount of money is ever going to bring back our friends or families or repair the harms that have been caused by the obesity epidemic in the United States. And while that is absolutely true, it also does help us to ensure that we can build systems that can respond to problematic substance use in our communities. So we are we are very thankful that we will be able to start building out systems that work."

STORYLINE:
The two largest U.S. pharmacy chains, CVS Health and Walgreen Co., announced agreements in principle Wednesday to pay about $5 billion each to settle lawsuits nationwide over the toll of opioids, and a lawyer said Walmart, a third pharmacy behemoth, is in discussions for a deal.
The deals, if completed, would end thousands of lawsuits in which governments claimed pharmacies filled prescriptions they should have flagged as inappropriate.
With settlements already proposed or finalized between some of the biggest drugmakers and distribution companies, the recent developments could be the among the last multibillion-dollar settlements to be announced.
They also would bring the total value of all settlements to more than $50 billion, with most of it required to be used by state and local governments to combat opioids, which have been linked to more than 500,000 deaths in the U.S. over the last two decades.
Under the tentative plans, CVS would pay $4.9 billion to local governments and about $130 million to Native American tribes over a decade.
