India’s middle class got busier after the economic liberalisation began in 1991. Perhaps this is why the number of domestic workers has increased by 222 percent since then, according to the Task Force On Domestic Workers. And the International Labour Organisation has found that the majority of the house-helps in India are women. However, the increasing dependence of professionals, business people and civil servants on domestic workers has apparently not resulted in recognition of the dignity of their labour. In the video above, some “maids,” as house-helps are popularly called in the country, share their experiences with their employers.
