(20 Oct 2016) Scientists at the European Space Agency (ESA) downplayed the likely loss of its Mars lander, saying Thursday that they gathered the data they needed for future missions.
The ESA lost contact with experimental Mars probe Schiaparelli shortly before its planned landing on the red planet Wednesday.
At a press conference in Darmstadt, Germany ESA officials said "the most important thing is to collect test data, and that is what we have successfully done."
The fate of the probe is unknown.
Schiaparelli - technically known as the ExoMars entry, descent and landing demonstration module (EDM) - was primarily a test vehicle.
Its job was to try out the landing system to be used for the next phase of the ExoMars mission which will fly a rover to Mars in 2020.
ESA successfully put Schiaparelli's mothership, the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO), into orbit.
It's now circling Mars.
Next year it's due to start sniffing the Martian atmosphere for signs of unusual trace gases such as methane, which may be a sign of life.
