How to DETHATCH A LAWN AND WHEN TO DO it.

In the spring time you'll see an awful lot of videos about dethatching or power raking the lawn. This is something that can have major health benefits to a lawn that has a thatch problem. It can also cause damage of the lawn doesn’t need a mechanical intervention.
In many cases the machines that you see being used are not actually making a huge benefit on the actual thatch layer. They are very effective at removing dead debris from grass clippings or from winter time shed, but not necessarily in breaking down the thatch underneath. Frequent trips will make an impact over time.

Aeration and topdressing, managing fertilizer applications, mowing properly, reducing insecticides when not needed and watering correctly will reduce thatch in your lawn.
