AI systems based on Large Language Models (LLMs) have rapidly become a useful tool for prototyping electronic devices, especially when it comes to writing code. But developing hardware can be complex. Challenges may arise around the integration of sensors and actuators, or when it comes to replicating devices for small- or large-scale production.

This project, led by Lars Erik Holmquist of Nottingham Trent University and funded by the pro² network, is seeking the solution. It leverages the power of LLMs to explore a novel approach called 'Conversational Prototyping', which will allow developers and end users to work in conversation with an AI system to develop the functionality of a prototype, incorporating sensing and actuation.

The project is aiming to produce three primary outcomes: a physical testbed that connects an LLM with sensors and actuators; a set of prompts and commands guiding the LLM's interaction with the testbed; and an evaluation of this approach to prototyping. It's supported by Co-Investigators Sam Nemeth and David Downes, as well as partners Datalink Electronics Ltd, Electric Circus, and Poppe & Partners.
