Author LaDarrion Williams: Blood at the Root Journey

We discussed how his book delves into HBCUs, ancestry, magic, and history. LaDarrion shared his experience growing up loving Harry Potter, Maze Runner, and fantasy books, and how he noticed the lack of Black magical and fantasy stories. This inspired him to create a film/TV show, and when that was turned down, he decided to write a book instead. He emphasized the importance of telling stories from the Black boy’s point of view, highlighting a perspective often missing in mainstream fantasy.

He revealed that it took him just 12 days to complete the first draft of his book! It all began with a tweet asking, "What if Harry Potter went to an HBCU?" Despite initial rejections, viral moments, and short films, the industry kept wanting more. Throughout his entire journey, he has persevered and made it through. I am proud to see where he is now.

Since our interview, his book has been featured on Good Morning America and other major media outlets. I'm incredibly proud of LaDarrion for landing a book series deal and watching his book grow to new heights.
