On first of Karkatakam (Malayalam month) ie July 17th an open market is opened in front of the Pakki temple.to sell the items made from bamboo by the Paraya (Sambava Community )
The temple located two kilometer east of Chingavanam in Kottayam district.
attract public to buy the handicrafts and other items made from bamboo by the Sambavas.
The myth is when the brahmin priests found the fallen idol of Lord Ayyappa and they couldn't raise and erect straight they approached
shabbily dressed man standing there for help.
He came and erected the statue.
The priests asked him what he wanted for the help he has rendered.
The man asked for permission to sell the items made by his fellowmen in front of the temple on Karkitakam first .
Permission was granted and since then every year the annual market continues.
The shabby dressed man was nobody else but Pakkanar.
The Pakkanar's predecessors continue the practice as ritual.
