The Metropolitan Opera, commonly known as the Met, is an American opera company located in New York City. It is currently based at the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center, situated on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. The Met is operated by the non-profit Metropolitan Opera Association, with Peter Gelb serving as the general manager, and Yannick Nézet-Séguin as the current music director as of 2018.

The Met was founded in 1883 as an alternative to the previously established Academy of Music opera house and made its debut in the same year in a new building on 39th and Broadway, now known as the "Old Met." In 1966, it moved to its current location at Lincoln Center.

As the largest classical music organization in North America, the Met presents about 27 different operas each year from late September through May, until 2019. The operas are presented in a rotating repertory schedule, with up to seven performances of four different works staged each week. Performances are held in the evening Monday through Saturday, with a matinée on Saturday. Some operas are presented in new productions each season, while others are revivals of productions from previous seasons. In the 2015-16 season, the Met presented 227 performances of 25 operas.

The Met's repertoire consists of a wide range of works, including 18th-century Baroque, 19th-century Bel canto, and the Minimalism of the late 20th and 21st century. These operas are presented in staged productions that vary in style from elaborate traditional decors to modern conceptual designs.

The Met's performing company includes a large symphony orchestra, a chorus, a children's choir, and many supporting and leading solo singers. The company also employs numerous freelance dancers, actors, musicians, and other performers throughout the season. The Met's roster of singers includes both international and American artists, some of whom have had their careers developed through the Met's young artists programs. Many singers appear periodically as guests with the company, while others maintain a long-standing association with the Met, appearing in multiple productions each season until they retire. The Metropolitan Opera is renowned for its world-class performances and contributions to the opera world.
