Skeletal Muscle Fiber Types, Training, and Performance with Dr. Andy Fry

Описание к видео Skeletal Muscle Fiber Types, Training, and Performance with Dr. Andy Fry

I invited Dr. Andy Fry back to the studio for a detailed discussion about skeletal muscle fiber types, training, and performance, in this episode of "Fitness Facts." Dr. Fry is a professor in the Department of Health, Sport & Exercise Sciences at the University of Kansas. He is also the Director of the Jayhawk Athletic Performance Lab. Throughout his career, Dr. Fry’s research has consistently focused on skeletal muscle physiology, resistance exercise, endocrine responses & adaptations to exercise, and overtraining.

Timepoints & Topics Discussed in this Video:
0:00:04 - Introductions: Dr. Andy Fry
0:00:43 - Dr. Fry's background researching skeletal muscle fiber types, training, and performance
0:05:23 - How is a skeletal muscle biopsy obtained?
0:10:24 - How is the biopsy tissue processed, and what staining methods are used to evaluate skeletal muscle fiber types?
0:16:54 - Myosin ATPase stain to identify Type I (slow twitch) vs. Type II (fast twitch) muscle fibers
0:49:09 - Can muscle fiber types change with training?
0:59:28 - Key points to remember regarding skeletal muscle fiber typing, and fiber type shifting due to training/exercise
1:08:22 - Structural and functional characteristics of slow twitch vs. fast twitch skeletal muscle fibers
1:15:00 - Comparing human muscle fiber types
1:21:00 - Single muscle fiber characteristics
1:25:50 - How does aging and inactivity affect muscle fiber types?
1:27:37 - Do elite weightlifters have different muscle fiber types?
1:34:03 - Research studies in the Jayhawk Athletic Performance Lab
1:38:19 - Closing: Dr. Fry and Dr. Taylor's contact information

If you have specific questions about exercise science, kinesiology, sports performance enhancement, bodybuilding, nutrition, supplementation, training, exercise program design, exercise technique, injury prevention, rehabilitation, etc., leave a comment below and I will try my best to produce a video over the topic in the future!
