Cycling along the south side of Loch Ness offers a truly unforgettable adventure, blending stunning scenery, tranquil roads, and a touch of Highland magic. You will follow the same route as the popular Etape Loch Ness road sportive.
Your journey begins where the River Oich flows into Loch Ness, in the bustling village of Fort Augustus. The ride starts with a challenging climb, ascending nearly 300 meters (984 feet) over several miles. As you gain altitude, the views unfold dramatically, offering sweeping vistas of the surrounding Highland landscapes.
After conquering the climb, the route transitions into a wilder, quieter part of the Highlands, where the solitude of the open road is yours to savor. As the terrain levels out, you’ll join the South Loch Ness Trail, a scenic stretch that winds through peaceful hamlets and tranquil countryside. Here you’ll catch your first glimpse of Loch Ness, the world-famous lake steeped in mystery and legend. You ride alongside the loch for a while, enjoying its serene beauty and the unique sense of calm it imparts.
The final leg of your journey leads you into Inverness, where the scenery shifts from rural tranquility to the lively charm of the city. Arriving at the Holm Mills Bridge, you’ll conclude your ride where the River Ness flows out of the loch, marking the perfect end to a remarkable Highland cycling adventure.

Just add music:
Most cyclists would agree that the ride to Col du Tourmalet is outstanding. But with music, opinions are very mixed. So we have added no music. Instead, we recommend adding your favorite music to the ride. It is quite simple. Mute YouTube and open a browser window. Find a site that offers music (Spotify, YouTube, etc.) pick the music you like, and enjoy the ride... We have left the original sound of the ride out. This is because the noise from passing cars, vibrations from the road, wind, and the rider's breathing drowns the natural sound of the surroundings.
