Learn how light bends as it moves through different mediums. THis property is known as refraction. Head to ngscience.com for a range of related resources for use in the classroom and at home.

Refraction is the change in direction of a wave when it moves from one medium to another. The amount of refraction depends on the indices of refraction of the two media and the angle of incidence.

When a wave enters a new medium at an angle, the wave will bend. The amount of bending depends on the difference in the indices of refraction of the two media. The index of refraction is a measure of how much a medium bends a wave. The higher the index of refraction, the more the wave will bend.

The angle of incidence is the angle at which the wave hits the boundary between the two media. The larger the angle of incidence, the more the wave will bend.

It is important to learn about refraction because it is the cause of many optical phenomena, such as rainbows, mirages, and lenses.

Some suggested refraction activities for the classroom include:
-A teacher could set up a light source at the front of the classroom and a piece of paper at the back. They could then have students come up one at a time to hold a variety of different objects between the light source and the paper. The students could observe how the light changes when it passes through the different objects.
-The teacher could also set up a light source and a piece of paper on a table. They could then place a variety of different objects on the paper and have students observe how the light changes as it passes through the different objects.
-The teacher could also create a simple experiment where they shine a light through a glass of water and onto a piece of paper. The students could then observe how the light bends as it passes through the water.
