Bengali Bhetki Malai Curry
During Durga Pujo, we love to feast! And yes, that includes non-vegetarian food too. Maa Durga, our beloved daughter's homecoming from her in-laws means celebration with all our favorite dishes - both veg and non-veg.
While one of our all time favorite (and very popular) is Chingri Malai Curry, let me introduce to another fabulous dish that's seriously just so good - Bhetki Malai Curry 😋
Made with tender Bhetki fish and creamy coconut milk, this dish is rich in flavors, and super simple to prepare with just a few ingredients.
Pair it up with some Pulao, and I bet you'll be licking your fingers for it's so damm good 😊
Pair this with Bengali pulao, and I promise it’ll have you licking your fingers
Recipe 👇
Ingredients:
• 500g Bhetki Maach (Asian Sea Bass), cut into 6-7 pieces
• 1 cup fresh coconut milk
• 1½ cups milk
• ½ tsp turmeric powder
• ½ tsp salt (for marination)
• ¼ cup mustard oil
• 2 bay leaves (tej patta)
• 3-4 green chilies
• 3-4 dried red chilies
• 1 large onion, made into a paste
• 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
• 1 tbsp sugar
• Salt to taste
• ½ tsp garam masala
• 1 tbsp ghee
Method:
1. Marinate the fish:
Marinate the Bhetki Maach with turmeric and salt for 15 minutes.
2. Fry the fish:
Heat mustard oil in a pan and sauté the marinated fish for 2-3 minutes on each side until slightly golden. Remove and set aside.
3. Prepare the base:
In the same oil, add bay leaves, green chilies, and dried red chilies. Sauté for a minute, then add the onion paste and ginger-garlic paste. Cook until slightly caramelized but not too dark.
4. Make the curry:
Add the coconut milk, regular milk, sugar, and salt to the onion mixture. Stir well and bring to a simmer.
5. Cook the fish:
Add the sautéed fish to the simmering curry and let it cook for 10-15 minutes until the gravy reduces and the fish is fully cooked.
6. Finish the dish:
Add garam masala and ghee, and simmer for another 5 minutes.
7. Serve:
Serve hot with rice or pulao.
Enjoy your Bhetki Maach and Malai Curry!
