This symposium is part of the SJSU iSchool’s celebration of Disability Pride Month, and features Chancey Fleet discussing her work on making the New York Public Library more accessible and user-friendly to people with disabilities. Chancey is joined by guests Adriana Lebrón White, Theodore Szpakowski, Brea McQueen, J.J. Pionke and nicholae cline.

Chancey is a Blind educator and activist based in Brooklyn, New York. She is the founding Assistive Technology Coordinator for the New York Public Library, where she runs a free tech service that connects library patrons with print-reading disabilities to 150 hours of coaching each month.

Adriana is a children’s librarian at Seguin Public Library in Texas. Since being diagnosed with autism in her 30s, she has led professional development sessions on autism-friendly programs, how to support neurodivergent library staff, and on authentic representations of neurodiversity and disability in children’s books.

Theodore works in the Gettysburg College Musselman Library in Pennsylvania, in the user services and scholarly communications departments. He has worked on a variety of projects related to disability justice, including a disabled authors display, an accessibility audit of the library building and services, and the library’s accessibility information webpage.

Brea is a student success librarian at Miami University, Hamilton in Ohio. She is one of the founding members of the #CripLib Discord server, which provides disabled library workers with a safe space to connect with one another and share resources about being disabled in the library and information science field.

At Syracuse University in New York, J.J. is an information instructor who teaches disability and librarianship courses. His award-winning research focuses on disability and accessibility in libraries for employees and patrons.

nicholae is queer, disabled, mixed-race and Indigenous, and is the media studies, gender studies and philosophy librarian at the Indiana University Bloomington Libraries. They are committed to dreaming and manifesting justice and joy into the present however they can.
