Does The Mummy (1999) still hold up? Turns out, it's not quite as good as I thought it was in the 2000s. Before I get to that, I provide some background and history to the production of this movie, as well as a review of The Mummy. Look, I'll be honest here. I started this video essay/analysis with the goal of unpacking why The Mummy (1999) is a classic. I set that goal based on my childhood memories of The Mummy Trilogy. Soon after watching them, I wasn't really jazzed about the series anymore. I wrote and researched a video in praise of the series anyway, and then scrapped a chunk of it and rewrote it at the last minute. As a result, this piece takes a sharp turn into being a bit of a diary on my nostalgia, and what happens when that nostalgia is confronted by the fact that maybe The Mummy (1999) isn't as good as I remember it being.
