I finally broke down and picked up a netless hammock chair from Dutchwaregear.com to try out and see how it sets up.

Important note: Please do NOT do what I did in this video for the sake of brevity. If using whoopie slings with a tree, please wrap the tree with a hammock strap and attach the whoopie sling to that via one of three methods: a larks head knot at the end of the strap, a Marlin spike hitch knot with a toggle and let the whoopie sling loop ride on the knot not the toggle, or use a Becket hitch knot to attach the strap to the whoopie sling loop. Using these methods, albeit longer in length, can still be adjustable, and protects the Cambium layer of the tree, which is its lifeblood, from potential stress damage.

Hammocks are available in Cloud 71, Hexon 1.0, Hexon 1.2, and Hexon 1.6 fabrics, depending on your weight handling capacity needs and how light you want to go. Suspensions range from the attached continuous loops to a set of whoopie slings (probably the best value) or a complete suspension with 5ft tree straps and whoopie slings with titanium whoopee hooks. The hammock can support between 200 lbs to 350 lbs, depending on the type of fabric.

The price starts at $42 and the suspension adds additional costs. The unit, as shown, was $92 complete with straps and whoopie slings in a 1.2 Hexon fabric, capable of supporting 275 lbs.

The hammock cloth as shown was only 140 grams, or 4.94 ounces in weight. With the complete suspension (even the parts I didn’t use), the weight of the system came out to 255.99 grams or 9.03 ounces total weight.

Dual Use:
In addition to using this chair to lounge off the ground while at camp, or eating lunch on the trail, it can also be used as a gear sling hammock, alongside your regular hammock, if you wish to keep your backpack or other gear off the ground at night.

Compared to other camp chair options, this one does require available trees. I’m sure it could also be set up with one tree and a Tensa Outdoors trekking tree, if need be. But in general, if you find a couple of trees about 8-10 feet apart, and set the head end around 6ft up and the foot end about 2ft up, this will work for most chair lounging situations. The foot height can be adjusted if you want to sit, lay & prop your feet up, or use it as a gear sling next to your normal hammock. At around 255 grams or 9 ounces of total system weight, this is about half the weight of a Helinox chair zero or a few ounces lighter than a three legged mesh stool from Hillsound.
