One of the most feared and brutal execution methods used throughout History was burial alive. The horrific practice is a common fear today, and it ranks alongside hanging, drawing and quartering as the most savage execution methods. Burial alive is closely linked to immurement, when a condemned person would be walled in a structure alive and then left to succumb to their fate. But throughout the years, it was used thousands of times to kill and many people would be thrown into a grave and then covered up with mud.

One of the most terrifying things about burial alive, or premature burial was that someone could be alive for a number of hours before they would succumb to their fate. Victims would die from suffocation, starvation and even dehydration and it was used in Ancient times inside of China and Persia. It was used also by the Japanese Army during the Second World War as they terrifying war crimes during the conflict. It was used heavily in Europe to punish women who had murdered their husbands or had committed heresy.
