Taken directly from the original 45, this is the debut release for the Chairmen Of The Board for the Charlotte, NC-based Surfside label, as well as one of the biggest beach music classics ever recorded.

BACKGROUND:
After having major success as the leader of two different R&B vocal groups over the years (namely The Showmen of "It Will Stand" and "39-21-40 Shape" fame) as well as the frontman of the Chairmen Of The Board ("Give Me Just A Little More Time", "Pay To The Piper", "Everything's Tuesday", among others), General Norman Johnson had plenty of experience in the music industry - not just as a singer, but a very talented songwriter as well.

As the 1970s went on, Johnson would depart the Invictus label after a number of creative differences arose between him, the Chairmen and the record label - so Johnson would wind up at Arista Records as a solo artist in the late 1970s and release some material for them, although he would ultimately depart a short time later wanting more in the way of creative and artistic freedom as a musician - so, in 1979, Johnson and Mike Branch (of The Tempests) would go on to co-found the Charlotte, North Carolina based Surfside Records, an independent label that specialized in releasing Carolina beach music.

Shortly thereafter, Johnson would reform the Chairmen, this time with fellow member Danny Woods and Ken Knox, and the group's first release for Surfside was a song that Johnson wrote "On The Beach", after suggesting that he and the Chairmen would go down to the Carolinas and write some songs about the beach music culture - where people would go down to places like Fat Harold's or The Pad and have the time of their lives. Johnson soon followed up "On The Beach" with the beach music standard "Carolina Girls"- written because, according to Ken Knox:
"Everybody had always talked and sang about California girls, but nobody ever really sung about the Carolina girls.
Well, The General really knew what people wanted to hear about, and he said 'I'm gonna write about the girls here'. And what the song did was to give a sense of pride to the women of the Carolinas - in fact, so much so that you would often see the song's title on things like license plates, T-shirts, and stickers everywhere.Because of this song, every generation would be proud of the culture; being a Carolina girl means that you're the best in the world."
