Opening in 1949, the Mahoning Drive-In theater has be entertaining the Lehighton Pennsylvania area with its massive 110 foot outdoor screen to the delight of movie-goers for decades. Throughout the 1950’s & 1960’s the theater flourished, and even with the rise of multiplex theaters in the 1970’s and 1980’s, Mahoning still remained popular enough to keep it operational. Unfortunately though by the mid twenty-teens patronage had fallen to a point of concern, so it was decided to no longer show newer movies, but instead focus on screening older films with a cult following. This was the saving grace of the theater as thousands of die-hard movie fans would travel from all over the United States to watch their favorite films on the big screen and attend the many movie related events held each weekend between April and September. Sadly In 2021 it was announced the theater would be closing permanently and replaced with a solar farm, but thanks to an outcry from locals and fans alike, the project was put on hold and the drive-in saved. As the last surviving drive-in to still show 35mm film prints each weekend, the Mahoning Drive-In is one of the most unique places to watch a movie today. With it’s beautiful outdoor wooded setting, it’s dedicated staff, and the many of like-minded fans who attend the film screenings, watching a movie at Mahoning is a one of a kind experience that everyone should experience.
