"who am i to say" by 'the statler brothers' is a song that has given me so much pause throughout my life. i've listened to their music my whole life; so did my mother and her entire family. the 70s-80s-etc country band did a pretty even split of hymns and songs about sex, which was fascinating to grow up with in my jarringly strict household.

sometime around highschool, i remember i started listening to this song in particular a lot; i remember being struck by the lyricism, how gentle it was, how solemn. i thought it was interesting particularly because the words seemed unlike many of their other songs; i then found out that this was probably because "who am i to say" was written and composed by kim reid, the daughter of one of the band members.

seeing as the song is expressing grief over the loss- presumably one relating to suicide, based on the wording of the song- of a woman who was the singers lover and friend, i was immediately captivated. obviously, the song could just not be from the perspective of the author; she could've easily just been envisioning a different, completely cishet man when she wrote it, and that would be fine i suppose, no shame. but, having been the person i was and the person i am now,,,

i hadn't quite figured out that i was gay at that point- i was still dating my highschool boyfriend lol- but it struck a chord even then. nowadays, it more so slams the piano cover down on my hands.

i've scoured the internet and tried to piece more together multiple times since 2019 (when i discovered this) but none of those searches has brought up anything. the most i found was an obituary or two, but neither made a lot of sense in terms of the timeline. frankly, this is probably for the best, i'd hate to dredge up other peoples' business too much. but whatever it was meant to be about, wherever kim reid is, i hope that the girl the song may or may not have been written about will be remembered by more people than just me and my awful acoustic guitar.

and, i hope maybe they end up in the same place.
