Janss Steps are an iconic landmark of UCLA's campus and named after two brothers Harold and Edwin Janss of the Janss Corporation who sold the part of their land holdings to the UC Regent where the UCLA currently sits on!

The Janss Steps are the original 87 step entrance to the UCLA campus. The top of Janss Steps offers a breath-taking view overlooking campus and the dormitories.

Dr. Martin Luther King gave a speech on the UCLA campus on April 27, 1965 and his speech took place at the base of Janss Steps because “no auditorium on campus was large enough to accommodate the crowd that was expected to hear him”.

There is a myth hanging around the Janss Steps too. A campus legend dating to the 1960s says that one of the Janss brothers is buried under the 6th tread, and that students should always avoid that step. Occasionally a student may hop over the 6th step to avoid the promises of bad luck. 😊
