At the end of December 1980, Airman First Class George Conway was abruptly switched from night shift to working Alpha Flight in the daytime. Everyone refused to talk about what had happened the night before and his usually friendly fellow airmen were strangely aloof. Even though it didn't make sense, after having spent a year at RAF Bentwaters and its sister base RAF Woodbridge he decided not to press further. George wasn't aware of the Rendlesham Forest Incident until 1994 when he saw an episode of Unsolved Mysteries featuring Robert Stack that mentioned it. He was shocked that he hadn't heard anything about it for 14 years.

In 1996, Captain Lori Rehfeldt, once an airman back in February 1980 when a UFO flew over RAF Woodbridge, reported it to the Law Enforcement Desk but knew that any investigation without support from her commander would be fruitless. It simply wasn't in her best interest to pursue an investigation of the sighting, so she did what she could: report it and talk about it with personnel at the air tower. Rehfeldt departed RAF Bentwaters two weeks prior to the Rendlesham Forest Incident (RFI), and to learn only about it 16 years later.
